Suffolk born and bred, Mary trained as a journalist on the East Anglian Daily Times before she became a political correspondent at Westminster. She returned home to Suffolk in 2004 and soon became involved in her local community leading the campaign to save and upgrade the village hall.

She moved to rural Suffolk 25 years ago with husband Martin to raise their 4 teenage children. As a director and trustee of local companies and charities, Karen would like to give something back to her local community.

Over her 20 years on the County Council, Cllr Spicer has served in a variety of positions on the front bench - including most recently 4 years as Cabinet Member for Public Protection which included being Chairman of Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service. She chairs the Suffolk Domestic Violence Forum and has been a Police Authority Member for 20 years.
