Internet Safety Strategy
We have published our internet safety strategy setting out how we aim to make the UK the safest place to be online. The government is working with social media companies to protect users, as 6 in 10 users have said that they have witnessed inappropriate or harmful content online. Digital technology is overwhelmingly a force for good across the world and we must always champion innovation and change for the better, but this must be balanced with the need to keep people safe and for parents can have the confidence that they can keep their children from harm when they are online.
Fixed Odds Betting Terminals
The maximum stakes on Fixed Odds Betting Terminals (FOBTs) are to be reduced from £100 to £2 to reduce the risk of gambling-related harm. When faced with the choice of halfway measures or doing everything we can to protect vulnerable people, we have chosen to take a stand. These machines are a social blight and prey on some of the most vulnerable in society, and we are determined to put a stop to it and build a fairer society for all.
Data Protection Act 2018
I was delighted that the Data Protection Act 2018 was given Royal Assent and has now been passed into law. Digital technology has transformed almost every aspect of our lives in the twenty years and this new legislation provides laws fit for the digital age in which an ever increasing amount of data is being processed. The Act empowers people to take control of their data and ensures that the UK is prepared for the future after we have left the EU.
In West Suffolk
Keep Active at Newmarket Leisure Centre
I’ve seen for myself that the Keep Active in Newmarket at the Leisure Centre is fantastic. I had a brilliant time enjoying the curling, table tennis and keep fit, and I’m grateful to lottery players who ultimately fund the programme. It is so important that sport and being active are a part of everyday life, especially for young people and also for those coming up to retirement age - we need to get those two groups to raise their activity levels. The programme from Keep Active is varied with a big range of activities, there’s something for everyone. I think it’s great – and a huge asset for the residents in West Suffolk.
It’s less than three weeks until Suffolk Day on 21 June. Here is your chance to celebrate all that is wonderful about Suffolk with events taking place across our fantastic county. There are so many ways to celebrate, on the Visit Suffolk website, 50 of them are listed here.
Eagle Labs event in Haverhill
I visited the Eagle Labs Live event, which was organised and run by Barclays, to see how the business people of Haverhill were improving their digital skills. Digital technology is moving so fast, and it affects all our lives – it is so important that we keep our digital skills up to date.
Download the Matt Hancock app
The Matt Hancock app was launched officially in February with a huge amount of media attention. Over 9000 people have downloaded the app, and the number of users continues to rise significantly every day. This app is a real step forward in creating a digital community for all of us here in West Suffolk to discuss the issues affecting our communities and our country.
I hope you will download this free app either thought the Apple app store or through the Google Play store - just search for “Matt Hancock MP”. Through the app, you will be able to be the first to hear my announcements and be alerted to news affecting West Suffolk. But most importantly, this app will give you the platform in which to get in touch with me and the other users of the app to discuss the issues that are most important to you.
