Last week was a busy one here in Westminster with Boris Johnson winning the Conservative Party leadership election on Tuesday and then becoming our new Prime Minister the following day.  I was honoured to be reappointed by him to be the health secretary at the Department of Health and Social Care. The NHS is the most valuable public service we have, and I am incredibly delighted to be continuing in the role - driving forward the agenda to safeguard the health and care of the nation.

Department of Health and Social Care achievements

I’ve been the health secretary for just over a year now.  We have a big agenda for the future of NHS and there’s lots more to do, but I am very proud of all that we have done over the past year:

We rebooted the Accelerated Access Collaborative to bring the latest medical innovations to patients more quickly.

We launched our Prevention Green Paper, launching a new approach to prevention underpinned by technology & predictive prevention.

We also announced a 2.5% pay rise for tens of thousands of doctors & dentists across the country - one of the biggest pay rises for over a decade ‒ in recognition of their tireless dedication & compassion.

We launched a consultation on pensions to make the system work better for senior clinicians.

We settled the Junior Doctors dispute. We’ve brought in record pay rises for the lowest paid nurses.

We’ve created NHSX - a whole new unit to drive forward digital transformation in the NHS to bring our NHS into the 21st century.

There are now record GPs in training and we’ve agreed a 5 year GP contract.

We launched the Interim People Plan, to ensure we recruit, retain & support the people who make the NHS - with a Full People Plan to come.

We launched our NHS Long Term Plan ensuring our historic funding settlement for the NHS goes to the frontline.

Beck Row Primary Academy

I am pleased that after very successful campaigning the proposal to relocate Beck Row Primary Academy to Great Heath Academy in Mildenhall has been scrapped. Beck Row Primary Academy is a much loved, viable village school with over 200 pupils. We should be doing everything possible to retain our wonderful tradition of village schools, not closing them without justification, and I am glad to see that parents and other interested parties have been listened to and that a sensible decision has been reached.

Constituency correspondence

As well as my work in Parliament, part of my role as MP for West Suffolk is to respond to constituents’ correspondence. Many local residents have written to me about the issues that matter to them - this chart shows the policy areas in which I received the most correspondence in June. If there’s a problem you think I can be of help with or if you would like to let me know your thoughts on a particular issue, please email me at

The Matt Hancock app was launched officially in February  2018 with a huge amount of media attention. Over the past year, the app has given me a fantastic platform to communicate with my West Suffolk constituents.  More than 10,000  people have downloaded the app, and the number of users continues to rise significantly every day.  This app is a real step forward in creating a digital community for all of us here in West Suffolk to discuss the issues affecting our communities and our country.
If you haven’t done so already, I hope you will download this free app either through the Apple app store or through the Google Play store - just search for “Matt Hancock MP”.  Through the app, you will be able to be the first to hear my announcements and be alerted to news affecting West Suffolk.  But most importantly, this app will give you the platform in which to get in touch with me and the other users of the app to discuss the issues that are most important to you.
