APRIL 2019 NEWSLETTER FROM
MATT HANCOCK MP
Here’s a snapshot of what's been happening in Westminster and West Suffolk
£6m funding for alcohol treatment programs
Alcohol misuse can have a devastating impact on people's lives - so I’m delighted we’re providing £6m to local authorities across the country to increase access to alcohol treatments for parents, rough sleepers & other vulnerable people.
Max and Keira’s Law
Max and Keira's law came into effect, which means hundreds of lives will be saved because of opt out organ donations. Under the new system, which comes into effect next year, consent will be presumed unless people have opted out. This legislation has the potential to save hundreds of lives every year and I am enormously proud that it will soon become law.
In West Suffolk
I’m delighted that construction of the Mildenhall Hub is underway. The Hub will bring together a new school, leisure centre, swimming pool, NHS health centre, library and other public services such as police access and citizens advice services. It represents a new and better way of delivering local services for the community and I can’t wait to see the Hub open and in use next year.
Significant progress is being made to get a cinema to Newmarket with a full business case being submitted to West Suffolk Council later this year and funding from the council of almost £200,000 for further design and study work. I have long campaigned to get a cinema to Newmarket. A cinema will bring a new leisure offer to the community as well as a boost to the night time economy.
Future High Streets Fund
A new £675 million Future High Streets Fund will be set up to help local areas to respond to changing shopping habits and to create more reasons than just retail for people to visit. Councillors will be encouraging Haverhill people, businesses and partners to get behind the bid and show their support in applying for the funding. Haverhill is a fantastic town and getting a share of this Fund will help to make it even better.
I'm calling on West Suffolk residents to get in touch with their nominations for West Suffolk South Asian restaurants to compete in this year's Tiffin Cup. One South Asian restaurant from every region of the UK is then shortlisted and is invited to participate in the Grand Final cook-off event held in the House of Commons. I’m looking forward to receiving entries from across the constituency, so please email me with your nomination at email@example.com by Sunday, 14 April and hopefully we can bring the Tiffin Cup to West Suffolk this year.
The Matt Hancock app is one year old
On 1st February, the Matt Hancock app was launched officially in February 2018 with a huge amount of media attention. Over the past year, the app have given me a fantastic platform to communicate with my West Suffolk constituents. More than 10,000 people have downloaded the app, and the number of users continues to rise significantly every day. This app is a real step forward in creating a digital community for all of us here in West Suffolk to discuss the issues affecting our communities and our country.
If you haven’t done so already, I hope you will download this free app either thought the Apple app store or through the Google Play store - just search for “Matt Hancock MP”. Through the app, you will be able to be the first to hear my announcements and be alerted to news affecting West Suffolk. But most importantly, this app will give you the platform in which to get in touch with me and the other users of the app to discuss the issues that are most important to you.
