Olympic flame to light up West Suffolk

Sunday, 1 January, 2012

On 7th July 2012, the Olympic Torch will visit West Suffolk. Both Haverhill and Newmarket will welcome the flame as it travels from Mount Olympus to London.

For Haverhill, it is recognition of the town’s growing importance. It is a victory for the Haverhill Echo’s campaign, which the organisers said was the best local campaign they have seen.

For Newmarket, the visit is a testament to the town’s unique nature.

In both towns, a day of community activity is being planned around the visit and everyone is encouraged to get involved.

Welcoming the news, local MP Matthew Hancock said:

“I am delighted the torch will come to Haverhill and Newmarket. Haverhill is a town on the up with fantastic momentum, and this announcement proves it to the country. The torch’s visit to Newmarket will be a reminder to everyone of Newmarket’s importance and prestige as the international home of horseracing.

“The spirit of the Olympic Games is coming to West Suffolk. Communities can take pride in our home being included on one of the most famous and enduring journeys in history.”
